Understanding your statement of results

Cambridge Assessment English uses a new way of reporting results for their exams that will provide you with more detailed information about exam performance: the Cambridge English Scale

The Cambridge English Scale is a range of scores used for reporting the results of the Cambridge English exams. It is designed to complement the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and allows for more straightforward results reporting across the Cambridge English exams and better meets the needs of all exam users, including candidates, teachers, universities and immigration departments.

Candidates will receive a score for each skill (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) plus Use of English. They will also get an overall score for the exam on the Cambridge English Scale.

For further information about Cambridge English Scale results for particular exams, please visit the Cambridge Assessment English website.

Extended certification - Pass Grades A B C

Although each of the Cambridge Assessment English exams is targeted at a particular level in the Common European Framework of Reference, they also cover the levels immediately above and below, and extended certification allows candidates to receive credit for their performance at these levels.

If you have exceeded the targeted level of your exam, you will be rewarded with a Pass at Grade A, which means that you actually performed at the next higher level. If you perform lower than aimed for, you will still receive a certificate stating that you reached the next lower level. Click here for more information on the different pass grades and how they reflect your language level. Also have a look at the section above explaining the certificates for each individual exam.

Results enquiries

If you feel that your exam was marked inadequately, Cambridge English has a rigorous and thorough Result Enquiry Procedure to ensure all components are checked and, if requested, re-marked. If you want to query your result, this must be submitted through the British Council on your behalf. This must be done within 14 days of the results being released online.

The Results Enquiry Procedure has two stages:

Stage What is the enquiry process? How long does it take?
Stage 1 A clerical re-check Approximately 5 days following receipt of all necessary information at Cambridge
Stage 2 A re-mark of all written papers* Approximately 5 weeks following receipt of all necessary information at Cambridge**

* Please note that this process does not apply to any Speaking test component.

** To request a Stage 2 enquiry, a candidate must have received their results and completed Stage 1 of the Results Enquiry Process.

Please note that there is a fee for Results Enquiry Procedure. Contact us for further information.
